National Day Of Hearing Testing

Madison audiologists identify over 50 people with hearing challenges

May 7, 2000 --

Saturday, May 6th - National Day of Hearing Testing

"If you think your hearing has changed, you are probably right. If you think no one else has noticed, you are probably wrong," so the Audiology Awareness Campaign slogan reads. May is Better Speech and Hearing Month! As part of the activities, May 6th, 2000 was National Day of Hearing Testing. This was an opportunity to find out if you were one of the 25 million Americans who have decreased hearing. This event was for all ages from birth to centurions.

The National Day of Hearing Testing was a joint effort between many organizations including:

bullet Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People
bulletAARP
bulletAcademy of Dispensing Audiologists
bulletAmerican Academy of Audiology
bulletAmerican Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Inc.
bulletAmerican Speech-Language-Hearing Association
bulletDeafness Research Foundation
bulletEMM Creative
bulletNational Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
bulletNational Institutes of Health

Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D., was the national spokesperson for this event.

This assessment was not intended for people who currently wear hearing aids. Members of the Madison Chapter of Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People (MA_SHHH) provided information about hearing loss. Licensed audiologists from the Madison-area staffed the sound treated booths at the Waisman Center to assess hearing abilities.
